spider veins and poor legs
4 Replies

I have spider veins in my legs pretty bad and I was just wondering with the spider veins and bad circulation in my legs, If anyone knew if that maybe why my legs hurt pretty much all the time? When I had my girls every surgery (3 C-sections) they would put those thick tight stockings on my legs. Which helped but they also hurt and would make my legs itch.

As far as I know, spider veins do not cause the type of pain you are describing in your legs. Do you have varicose veins as well? They will certainly cause pain along with FMS symptoms. Spider veins and varicose veins can be treated by sclerotherapy. The veins are injected with a solution that shrinks them. The blood supply is redirected by your body to other areas not so close the skin. I've had it done and it is not the most comfortable procedure especially for varicose veins. Varicose veins run in my family so I am being proative wether I enjoy the process or not. Spider veins are pretty easy to treat using the same method and in both cases the results are great.

I too have a lot of issues with both types of veins in my legs. I also have poor circulation. I know my insurance will cover the cost of vericose veins bu not spider veins, (they consider that cosmetic!) What type of doctor does this procedure?

See a good dermatologist. Some of them will do sclerotherapy in office or will refer you to someone else. If varicose veins are being treated your legs should be pressure wrapped for at least 24 hours for best results. Some professionals do not do this which requires more follow ups. It is a nusiance to have gauze and ace bandages on both legs for 24 hours but after the bruising fades the results are fantastic. This is not a warm weather procedure as you will need to wear slacks for several weeks afterwards. I usually go to the last appointment available on a Friday so I can be off of my feet until the great unveiling 24 hours later. Spider veins are more easily treated using the same procedure. You may get some bruising at the injection site but unless you have a lot in one one area wrapping is not necessary. Best of luck to you.
