Hello Everyone,

I was recently diagnosed with fibro, I have been dealing with the symptoms for around three years not knowing what was going on. My dr at the time kept telling me it was my back or a pinched nerve and would not listen to me when I would try to explain that I was hurting everywhere and other symptoms. We moved out of state and I was able to get insurance through social security and from there I found a new dr. He took one look at my files and did the physical examination and from there diagnosed me. As of now he weaned me off of all the narcotics the crazy dr. had me on and increased my gabapentin intake and put me on a sleep medication. Though I know this is something that I will have to live with the rest of my life, I am hopeful that my new dr. and I will find a treatment that helps decrease the symptoms of this horrible thing.
Anyhow this morning I was doing a fibro search adn this site came up. So far it has been a great site to read and very informative, more so than alot of the other ones out there. I look forward to being an active member of this forum. Thank you all for taking the time to read.

LadyNae - Welcome to the board!

Hi LadyNae - hope you find something that helps you feel better. But please, please think about it before you insinuate that people who take narcotics are crazy, or that a dr. is crazy for prescribing. Gaba drugs work for some, but not others - we all have to work out a treatment regimen for ourselves.

I bite my tongue about drugs like Lyrica - I've read studies that it is no better than placebo and is just being marketed aggressively. I have friends who had horrible reactions. And the side effects, like weight! However, I read the forums and I see that it works for many people. So, to each his own... with respect. :)

I didn't mean any disrespect to anyone. I know that everyone is different and responds differently to treatments. I am still processing my feelings for my previous dr. that are mainly angry because she wouldn't listen to me. I had straight out asked her about Fibro in one of my visits and she told me that it was something that Drs. made up when they didn't have an answer to a problem. So if I upset anyone I by not explaining I am sorry.

LadyNae -
Your experience with the doctor telling you that Fibromyalgia is "made up" is very typical. FMS is recognised by the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and the National Arthitis Foundation. It is correctly referred to as a syndrome.

There are still a lot of doctors out there that have no idea how to treat FMS. They "prescribe" everything from hot baths to very strenuous exercise to treat the symptoms. And then there are the doctors who throw narcotics at patients instead of trying Lyrica, Cymbalata or Savella first. In my mind, this is a blatant effort to simply shut the patient up instead of working through a regimen of drugs to see what may help. If,in the end, narcotics are what is needed, so be it. Better that the patient may be addicted but have some quality of life than none at all. There is no set formula for treating FMS as we all experience different "perks." Hence, the science project approach we all must endure to find a combination of meds that work.

You have every right to be angry with the first doctor that "treated" you. As part of the closure process, I'd like to suggest that you write a letter of complaint to whatever hospital system affiliation that doctor has as well as your health insurer at the time. That might help you get past the whole incident. And, you'll be doing the next FMS patient that this doctor may see a big favor. We have to be our own best advocates when it comes to dealing with this syndrome. Take care.
