Antidepressants and Pain Meds.. Any suggestions?

I went to see a doctors office (i actually just saw a nurse)on Wednesday and was totally relieved! She said that they will be sending me to a Fibro Specialist (never heard of one), a neurologist and also a rheumatologist. They are going to switch up some of my meds too. I have to go back on Monday to see the actual doctor to figure out what meds I should be on. I am wondering if anyone has an antidepressant they like. I have been on EFFEXOR, PAXIL and now PROZAC. It seems like every year or so, I have to switch because they don't work well anymore. I see myself taking more Xanax daily due to the depression and anxiety not being controlled.

I am also wondering what type of pain meds I should ask for. I have high liver enzymes and was told that I should stay away from Tylenol.
I was given Norco 7.5 but need to take them every 4 hours. Does anyone else take Norco? If so, is that the only pain med or do you have others to combine? I think I need a long lasting narcotic so I am not hurting as bad in the morning.

Thanks for all of your input! Have a great and safe Fourth of July. Hopefully we can be able to manage our pain and other symptoms long enough to have a good day!

I have been on Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, Trazodone, Cymbalta, Nortriptyline, Amitriptyline, Ritalin, and Remeron. I found Paxil and Ritalin to help the most with anxiety while Nortriptyline helped the most with depression. None of these drugs did anything for pain.

As for pain meds, I love Dilaudid and Fentanyl combo. I take 4-16mg of Dilaudid IR, 12mg Dilaudid XR and 25mcg/h Fentanyl patches. None of that liver killing Tylenol! :)

Hi! I've taken many anti-depressants and the only thing I've found to work for me is Lexapro. It's the only one that didn't give me any side effects...except it does make me sick to my stomach so I take it at night before I go to bed and then I don't have any problems with it. It doesn't help with the pain at all...but I'm bi-polar and it sure helps with that!

I also take Norco 10/325 for pain. I've tried several other pain meds and every time I go back to the Norcos. I think I must be pretty sensitive to medications in general...alot make me sick or super tired. I have 3 kids and I can't take anything that is going to make me drowsy all day long. But the norcos don't do either of those things to me and I think they take about 80% of the pain away completely.

I honestly can't imagine not being able to take the norcos. they have been my "life saver" and the only way I can get through the day is with them.

I hope your doctor gives you what you need. Best of luck! Take care of yourself and have a Happy 4th of July! (we have big plans to go to a friends house and I have SO much to get done today and tomorrow and it's days like today that I hope to God I can get through all of this and still feel good enough to go enjoy tomorrow!) Keeping my fingers crossed! Stacey :o)

oh! I forgot to tell "doctor" is actually a Nurse Practitioner. But she's the very best Doctor I've ever been to. She's the first to actually care about me and LISTEN to me and she will try anything to help me and make me feel a little better. I don't know what I'd do without her! I already drive about an hour each way to see her and now she is moving her practice even further away...but 1 1/2 hours drive to see her is SO worth it!

Just wanted to tell you that sometimes a nurse turns out to be more helpful and better than a real doctor! Stacey :o)

I went to the doctor yesterday. I can't remember EVER having a doctor listen to me and be interested in what I was saying. He stated for Chronic Pain, you need a LONG acting opiod. He said we could do the patch or morphine. I opted for the morphine pill (The patch really irritated my skin before).
Well it is 30mgs twice a day. He stated I could have something for breakthrough pain if needed. Right now, I feel like I am floating off the morphine. But I woke up this morning and was able to get out of my bed without tearing up and crying! The tailbone pain is still there but not as severe.
As for the antidepressants I am still on my Prozac. Doc said they might not be working as effectively with my pain level being this high? Never heard of that. But I am going to look into what meds I need to be on. I do have Anxiety and Depression Disorder. I was diagnosed with this over 10 years ago.

Thank you for all of your input! I will start a new thread soon and tell you how things are going.

I've tried Savella (made me severely nauseated and made me vomit). Now I'm on Lyrica and Cymbalta. I believe the Lyrica is helping at least a little. The Cymbalta is a new addition. I have trazodone that was prescribed pre-diagnosis and it helps a lot with keeping me asleep. But the fm specialist that I saw at the pain management clinic is against narcotics for fm patients. But I was taking 10 mg of lortab, 3x a day. It dulled the pain a little, but not tremendously. But a little help is better than none, but they won't give it to me anymore because the fm doc believes in a more holistic approach - diet, vitamins. I'm very skeptic and I really liked having that little bit of pain relief.

you need to go to a different doctor. i see a pain specialist also. i know that some people say that narcotics dont help fibro, but i believe those people either dont have fibro or their symptoms are not bad yet. believe me the last thing i want to take is tylenol #3. but if it helps me go to work and lead a semi normal life, then i will take should have to live with pain. so if you are still in pain and your doctor isnt doing anything about it then please change doctors. its your life not theirs
