Is there any information about the progression of fibromyalgia? My wife has it. What can I expect in the future?

DaveWave - You ask a very tough question. Based on my own personal experience there is no progression with Fibromyalgia (FMS) per se. It is more of a ebb and flow of symptoms where we go through flares and then things may subside for a while.

Flares can be brought on by stress, diet, weather or for no readily apparent reason. Then we may experience a brief window where many of our symptoms subside again for no apparent reason. I had a one day episode where I felt absolutely perfect a year or more ago. I thought I was having some sort of out of body experience. Imagine if you will, how frustrating any of this is for someone living with FMS.

Everyone is different so I can not speak for your wife's situation. All I can tell you is that this is the "better or for worse" part of the relationship. Believe me when I tell you that she needs all of the support and care that you can muster.

And finally, if you are not satisfied with the quality of treatment she is getting than gently speak up as a loving spouse. You can go to the National Fibromyalgia Association website and ask them for a referral to a fibro-friendly rheumotologist in your area. Sometimes a fresh set of eyes and a new treatment plan can make a big difference.

Take care and let us know if there is anything else we can do to help.
