I have been experiencing jaw lock for about a year now. Usually it will last no longer than 24hrs, But i have now had it for 5 days and it doesn't feel as though it's easing. its very uncomfortable and can be painful. Its difficult to eat, brush my teeth etc and just opening my mouth is painful. I also hear it clicking when i open my mouth. i would like to know why it happens and why it is lasting so long on this occasion. is there anything i can do to prevent it?

I also have problems with this. It is the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) that gives me such fits. There are actually stretches and things that can help relieve it. I know how frustrating it is - it also leads to headaches and neck pain. There may be techniques besides the stretches. Do you grind or clench your teeth? I clench (a lot!) and my physical therapist advised me to keep my tongue between my top and bottom front teeth to keep from doing it. If you can see a PT, you should. They are huge help in the battle. I hope this helped! Anne R.
