Shingles Anyone??
barbara s. - November 28

Does anyone else deal with shingles?? Well I have had it for years. I had an outbreak that in late October that went away like normal - with acyclovir- and two weeks ago I started getting these spots on my arm. I went to the doctor today, and he has no idea what they are - he said they look like CHICKENPOX!!! But he doesn't think they are because he never heard of anyone getting chickenpox from shingles. (I had chickenpox as a child, and that's what causes shingles). I have about 15 "pox" on one forearm, 3 on the other forearm, and 1 on my chest, but that's it. He said if it was chickenpox, it should be concentrated on my trunk. They itch like crazy. Does any one have a clue, because my doctor was no help at all. He said if it ever happens again to come in right away when they're fresh and he be able to better tell what they are. I have no fever and I feel fine (for somone who is fibrolicious). Thanks

um shingles is chicken pox, chicken pox on the nervous system areas....like spine and stuff. my moms old boyfriend had it really bad at christmas time one year, it was so bad he was sayign things he dosnt' rememebr and jsut wierd things that just wasnt him...... you ahve to be really carefull cause it can be contagious...when bob had it he had to keep his towels serperate an brushes and we even had to make sure his dishes were wshed spereatly ..usually its a thing that odler people get but its brought on by stress.
chiken pox and shingles are both forms of hepres simplex....coem to think of it i beleive i jsut posted something in the support? forum that epsten barr virus is related to hypothyrodism which is an overlapping fms thing and ebv is also a form of herpes virus..and once you've got it even if the infection is gone the virus lays dormant in your system...so mayeb its all connected????? wierd oh and by the way when bob had shingles he had it on his head hence the brushes and towels we had to keep seperate and the temporary dementia....it was really gross... but he got over it i dotn recall exactly what meds he was on but he was on some...good luck i hope it clears up for you..the key is to stay as unstressed as possible

Shingles (herpes zoster) is an outbreak of rash or blisters on the skin that is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox — the varicella-zoster virus. The first sign of shingles is often burning or tingling pain, or sometimes numbness or itch, in one particular location on only one side of the body. After several days or a week, a rash of fluid-filled blisters, similar to chickenpox, appears in one area on one side of the body. Shingles pain can be mild or intense. Some people have mostly itching; some feel pain from the gentlest touch or breeze. The most common location for shingles is a band, called a dermatome, spanning one side of the trunk around the waistline. Anyone who has had chickenpox is at risk for shingles. Scientists think that in the original battle with the varicella-zoster virus, some of the virus particles leave the skin blisters and move into the nervous system. When the varicella-zoster virus reactivates, the virus moves back down the long nerve fibers that extend from the sensory cell bodies to the skin. The viruses multiply, the tell-tale rash erupts, and the person now has shingles.

Amber- I think you misunerstood. My doctor knows shingles come from chicken pox, But I appear to have "pox" like marks in a totally different location than you get shingles. Shingles does not look like chickenpox. Also shingles is NOT contagious as shingles. You can only give yourself shingles. You can however get chicken pox from someone who has shingles IF you have never had chickenpox. Thanks for your reply.

First of all, WHAT'S UP with the COMMERICALS in the middle of our post? Barbar, it is rare to have chicken pox again, but I have heard that if you don't get a good all over breakout the first time that you can geet them again. Have you been around anyone who has them? I have had shingles before, in fact that is what my doctor was treating me for before he diagnosised me. I however kept breaking out! I happened to have a break out when I saw the rheumatologist. He said it was a lupus rash! I hope that isn't what you have but maybe you need to have some more blood work done. Let us know!!

oh well i knew soemthing was contagious and sorry i guess i did read it worng..allthough when i was reading the rash description i did think it was odd cuase you said it was on both sides and thats not where shingles goes..lol thats where my fibro fog kicks in i guess lol...mayeb you jsut ahd an allergic reaction then , i just knew we had to be carefull when bob had the shingles

WHAAAAAAAT IS WITH THE COMMERCIALS!!! Amber, you are correct about it being contagious! Shingles is the chicken pox virus that lays dormat at the end of the nerves. It becomes active again in some people, after some stressful event when your immune system is low. They are working on a shot now that you take if you have ever had chicken pox & it is said it will prevent you from getting shingles! I've heard it won't work if you have already had shingles though! Mine were in different spots on my body & face, but where in clusters not one here & there. I think Amber my be right. It may be an allergy. Someone here was talking about getting a rash after being in the sun. I have that, the DR said I am allergic to the SUN! (:p). Hope this helps!!
