carrie - October 5

i have had pain in left lung for 2 yrs. now. i was first told i had coscochondritis , but now i am being told it could be arthritis. i am confused. it flares up more after i have done excessive amounts of work. it is painful to the point where sometimes i cannot sleep on left side or even touch my ribs. it feels more like a bone type pain and it starts midways down left ribs clear to the bottom....help!

Have you had a chest x-ray to rule out other possible conditions or a CT Scan? Ask your doctor about it again I think this should not go on. Let us know how it goes.

NO I HAVE NOT, BUT I DID HAVE AN X-RAY 2YRS. AGO WHEN THIS ALL STARTED PLUS I HAD EVEN BEEN ADMITTED IN A HOSP. OVERNIGHT IN JAN. OF 2004 FOR EVERY TEST IMAGINABLE TO CHECK OUT MY HEART AND EVERYTHING CAME BACK FINE....TOLD ME TO TAKE IBUPROFEN. I MENTIONED IT TO MY FAMILY DOC. 2 MOS. AGO AGAIN AND HE JUST LOOKED AT ME AND SAID IT IS PROBABLY ARTHRITIS. MAYBE I SHOULD ASK FOR A REPEAT X-RAY, HUH? THANKS FOR WRITING TO ME! I AM JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND IF SO WHAT ARE THEY BEING TOLD IT IS?

OK Carrie, lets see what we can do. Please remember I'm not a doctor just talking from experience. Sounds like maybe you need another doctor. Now if you have osteoarthritis in your back, the thorax area it is possible for this to be causing the pain, a deep bone pain as you described. I have it in my back thorax area and it hurts on the right side of my lungs and around to the ribs. They can take an MRI of that area to see if there is any degeneration (osteo) in that area. The test is expensive, do you have insurance? Let's see, if that is what it is we need to determine medication. You know celebrex, Bextra, and vioxx is off the market but there is another medication called arthrotec which can help with the pain of osteoarthritis if this is what it is. Now Ibuprofen can help with this too but did you ask your doctor about the dosage? It takes 600mg or 800mg to fight the inflamation and it's over the counter medication so it's cheaper and have something on your stomach for taking it alone can cause stomach problems. I would still advise you to talk with your doctor or new one before taking this dosage of ibruprofen because I don't know what other medes you might be taking. I know this is very frustrating but hang in there until we know what is going on.

I have dealt with coscacondritis pain since I was a teenager. Not fun but I wonder if it was a pre symptom of Fibro. I have now dealt with the fibro and cosco for 8 years. Deep breathes and relaxive exercises help the pain in the chest the most. I've never found a pill to make it better although I do use Aleve which I think helps prevent it. Take it before I do strenuous activity. I'm sorry that you are enduring this also but am relieved that I'm not the only one. Its so easy to feel alone.

MANI THANKS FOR THE INFO. I HOPE YOU GET WELL. YOU ARE RIGHT IT IS NO FUN SOMETIMES. I FINALLY FOUND AN ARTICLE ABOUT COSCOCHONDRITIS AND IT REALLY DESCRIBED THE SYMPTOMS BETTER THAN ANYTHING ELSE I HAVE READ AND I DO BELIEVE THIS IS MY PROBLEM CAUSE EVERYTHING FITS ME PERFECT. THE 1 DOC. AT THE HOSP. I WAS ADMITTED INTO THE 1 TIME SAID THEY THOUGHT THAT WAS MY PROBLEM, BUT MY REG. DOC. SAID IT COULD BE ARTHRITIS, BUT I THINK NOW IT IS THE COSCO. WISH YOU ALL THE LUCK.
