Klonopin etc with sleep apnoea
1 Replies
bogie - April 1

I was prescribed Klonopin by my consultant and I know it would really help me sleep and relax my muscles but in the past, I've woken up with the sensation of having forgotten how to breathe and I have several seconds gasping panic before I take a breath. It goes in phases and I'll have it several times over a couple of weeks, and then nothing for months, It's worse when I'm exhausted.
I've no idea if I stop breathing on a regular basis as I've lived alone for years.
I've had this on and off for over 8 years now and in all honesty, its actually getting less and less frequent luckily!

I've asked 2 doctors who say it isn't sleep apnoea -- one said it's just that my body wakes from a deep sleep too quick before my brain has caught up.
I still worry though that it might be central sleep apnoea where your brain forgets to tell you to breathe and I don't know if thats something which happens many times a night, or just several times a year as I seem to get it.
Or if it's something entirely different.

i want to take the meds but I'm terrified I'm going to die in my sleep because I won't wake up to breathe as it says in the leaflet don't take if you have sleep apnoea. My consultant told me just to take quarter of a tablet but when I did, I got so incredibly anxious that I still couldn't sleep as I was scared I'd die.

it says on this site that 80% of fibro patients have sleep apnoea so what kind of meds do you take as most of that family of drugs say to avoid if you have this condition.

Would I be ok with quarter of a tablet? My consultant says so but I'd rather hear it from someone who does it and hasn't died!
