I also have ibs and haven't found anything to help yet. I tried st. john's wort but it didn't do anything for me. Good luck.

i've been taking Elavil (anti-depressant) 30 mg every night at bedtime. this has pretty much diminshed all my ibs symptoms...and i was really bad for a long time. i could never eat anything, but now i don't worry about eating certain foods

I also had IBS that was resolved once I started taking Elavil. I do still have it on occasions when I am under extreme stress.

I have fibro and IBS too, couldn't take elavil, wiped me out, but I found that St Johns Wort, is good for PMS symptoms, it is important to find out how much you need to take, if it was too strong, might have been too much you were taking, certain meds can be substituted with herbal remedies, but you should research everything you take first, everybody responds differently. One thing for sure, is diet is crucial with IBS, you should consider eliminating caffiene from your diet and processed foods as much as possible. Sleep and excercise help to work out the tension in your life. When I have bad flares it is like hard labour, I take muscle relaxers, lots of water and ice packs on the spasming muscles affected. keep a journal of all the foods or activities that cause flares and then discipline yourself to avoid them.
