hypothyroidism

Has anyone had any relief from fibromyalgia symptoms by getting treatment for hypothyroidism?

I live in the New York City area, am about to turn 55, and have had fibromyalgia for about 21 years. The onset of muscle pain and fatigue was pretty sudden following surgery in 1985 which involved post-operative infections. However, my medical history also includes severe hayfever, endometriosis, mono, chicken pox at the age of 28, and more recently hypothyroidism. I'd welcome any advice from those having sought treatment for an underactive thyroid. Thanks.

You are right on!!!!! If one on your master glands is not working then all of your other glands such as adrenals, thyroid, pitutatary, hypothalamus all get out of wack and over loaded---then you blow a fuse, you circuitry gets broken and all of your systems start to malfunction. Unfortunately, the medical tests for thyroid problems is very outdated and despites recent changes (3 years ago) by the America Associations of endochronlogist most doctors still are diagnosing by outdated standard ranges. Then to complicate things more the labs where the blood test are read are still not subscribing to these new ranges so people end up going from doctor for many years and ending up with full blown fibro, lupus and other autoimmune diseases. It is sickening when it all could be avoided. Doctors continue to treat patients by lab tests and choose to dismiss the patients. Then it gets more complicated as most doctors are still prescribing the synthetic thyroid hormone Syntroid which only has the T4 hormone and not T3. Therefore many people that had graves disease or any thyroid disease that is on synthoid will be sick and end up as hypothyroid, then lupus and fibro. You are right - have had this for many , many years, unfortunately by the time your blood tests finally reach the range that the outdated medical community is still using you have lost many, many , many years going to the wrong doctors. I also can look back and see how many years I have had this and how wrong about 10 doctors were. If you want to bypass the learning curve and find a doctor that "get's it", and corrects the problem not just prescribes meds for the symptoms I suggest you check out a fibroandyfatigue.com center. I live in upstate NY in dutchess county and go to the Norwalk location. They have a 91% cure rate. There are alot of books written on this topic by patient advocate Mary Sholomon. Best wishes, I can tell that you will not be wasting any more of your life being sick by being open to learning more about this syndrome. It is a touchy subject for most as no-one wants to believe their doctor may have been giving them wrong advice for all of these years. Please read my posts under "what is your temperature" and "what should we call ourselves". Best wishes, keep educating yourself, stay open to new advice and you will be well soon. --- Kathy

I had chicken pox at the age of 26! It is the only childhood disease I have ever had!! My son brought them home from Kindergraden & gave them to me & his three month old brother. As for hypothyroidism, I have the oppsite condition. I am hyperthroid!! I have Grave's Disease, Lupus & a number of other condtions, too many to mention!! Up in till about two years ago, I was relatively healthy. I am a prefectionist that did everything for myself!! Larry is right about the thyroid controlling every system in your body, however he is not right about it causing autoimmune diseases, they are genetically perdispostioned! Sorry Larry! Iam all for becoming informed, but don't believe everything you read!!

Thanks for all your responses. And, Happy Thanksgiving to all! Teresa, interesting about the chicken pox. My 9-month-old had a mild case after I had them, but my 2 1/2-year-old did not catch them until six years later when exposed at school. I never did figure out how I was exposed to them. The grocery store??? asalinc298, do you take the medication for T3 uptake in addition to the Synthroid? I've heard that's important. You say that you don't have any relief from the fibro, but have you noticed any increase in your energy level? I am sure that there are multiple things going on in my system. I have had fibro muscle pain and other problems like dizzy spells, chronic eye infections, etc. for over 20 years, but haven't had the extreme fatigue or weight gain until my thyroid started giving me problems. So, my hope right now is to just get back to the energy level I was at 3 years ago. The biggest problem with all these immune system issues is trying to isolate the problems. Lately, I am having digestive problems, too. I'm running out of ideas of what to eat that won't give me trouble! I have been using Life Force Body Balance for about 2 months -- phytonutrients from aloe and sea vegetables. Anyone else out there tried that? Thanks again for your comments.

I have hypothyroidism and am taking Armour thyroid. I've also changed my diet to sugar and yeast free. I have seen a tremendous improvement in my fibro symptoms.
