How to find a doctor in my area

What type of doctor would be best if I suspect that I have fibromyalgia?

Hi Patricia. A Rheumatologist. Yesterday, I finished researching and making endless phone calls in order to find a doctor who I think I will be comfortable with. Like you, I highly suspect that I have FM. I worked for GP Physicians for almost 20 yrs as a Medical Assistant, so I am very leary when selecting a new doctor. Especially one who I NEED to understand and listen to the number of symptoms I'm living with right now. After finding Rheumatologists within 100 miles of me (I'm in a fairly rural area), I then did a Google Search using the doctor's name. If I liked what I read about their credentials, I then phoned and asked if the doctor treated FM patients. That process eliminated some doctors as well as learning that 3 were not taking new patients. Eventually, my search led me to several doctors who are affiliated with Duke Univ. Hospital in Durham, NC. (I'm in VA.) I have chosen a doctor who I feel very comfortable with. I have an appointment with my GP's Nurse Practioner on Friday in order to get the phone referral the Duke doc requires. I'm sorry this is lengthy, but I hope my journey helps you in some way to find a caring and qualified doctor. Hugs, Donna
