Fibromyalgia/Herniated disc
1 Replies

Not long after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I was getting dressed, bent over and felt a electic current type pain go down my back and leg. I started having severe lower back and leg pain. My doctor kept saying it was my fibromyalgia, but I was in severe pain constantly. X-rays of my back showed narrowed disc space, but nothing else.
I had an open MRI (I'm a little claustrophobic), but no one told me that the open MRI wasn't as good at diagnosis as the closed MRI. I went to a doctor that ordered a myleogram and it finally showed a disc problem. I had a lower lumbar laminectomy performed by an excellent neurosurgeon. He said that a lot of the pain was from a nerve wrapped around the herniated disc which did NOT show up on any of the scans.
I am sharing this because I don't want anyone to go through what I did. It took 3 months of severe pain to get a correct diagnosis. By the time, the diagnosis came, I was having thoughts of suicide. Fibromyalgia can cause all kinds of problems, but you know your own body better than anyone else. If something is wrong that you feel is not taken seriously, please find a doctor that can help. It might save your life! Take care!

Hi: I'm glad you continued to find your underlying condition. You have to stay after your doctors until you find the problem in which you did. Hats off to you and have a Happy New Year. :) smile
