Do you ever get used to the pain?

For those who have been suffering a long time, do you guys ever get used to the pain? I've been in pain for about 4-5 years and it still occupies my mind and hurts just as much or worse. Only time I get some relief is when I take my Dilaudid, which I only have so much to spread around.

Noca - For me, the long and short answer is "no." I've been dealing with it for about 3 years now. Some days I would like surgically remove "me" from the rest of my body. As much as possible, I try not to focus on the pain. I find things to do that genuinely interest me. I do what I can for others which also removes the focus on my ongoing medical drama. For the most part my game plan works. Nothing is perfect but if anyone else has better suggestions or ideas, I'd like to hear them. Take care.

I have read that as time goes by the brain gets better and better at perceiving pain and gets stuck there when a person has had chronic pain for a while. It might be months in some people and years in others. I don't mean to say that it isn't real or that the sufferer is to blame in any way. Some therapies involve trying to shut off the constant pain signals through meditation or thinking differently. I have found that it works for my pain which is mild if I work at it but I can't imagine it working for someone who has severe pain and that's why you guys amaze me with what you are able to withstand. I couldn't do it and you all are truly better people than I am.

kvc33 the degree of suffering I am in or others are in does not negate your own suffering no matter what.
