ct scans and x rays

Stephanie417 - October 1

this may seem off subject.. but during my period of not being properly diagnosed, I was sent to many doctors for repeated tests.. I worry about my exposure to radiation.. has anyone else had multiple ct scans and x rays?.. I have had about 6 on my head/sinus area and three follow up ct scans to my chest.. I have also had about 3 other chest xrays in the past.. It worries me very much.. some words of reassurance would be great !.. you all are great here.. i dont know what I would do without this site !

I have scoliosis and that warrents about 50 bigillion xrays, everytime i got a new brace made, every few months b4 surgery right after surgery and the follwoing years after that....not includign chest x-rays and mutiple hand and feet x-rays due to my pain to rule out arthritis.im the x-ray queen.lol. i remember when i was in jr high i asked my science teacher about all my x-rays because thats when i found out about my scoliosis and if i remember correctly he siad to me ...it wont hurt you more than standing next to a microwave would! As for ct scans ive never had one.. but i know x-rays are okay , i knwo they put those things on your tummys (for your uterus protection) and the radiologists stand behind the screens..but they have more contact with the x-rays than we do. I think you would actually ahve to stand under the machine non-stop for a whoel month consecutivly to get any reation from it! I woulndt worry if they were not safe they wouldnt be used! If they were not safe i would have two heads and 6 arms by now! I know its tough to try think what caused this and its hard not to worry..maybe i should not ahve doen this or that or that or this....but inthe end we have to deal with the now. Just rememrb everyone gets this for different reasons! Take care and try to relax!

amber.. curious if you get rib pain with scoliosis.. I have it mildly. and i have a lot of problems with my ribs.. they hurt a lot on one side.. also i have back pain in one spot.. do u get this ?

Stephanie417,

I really wouldn't worry about it too much. I had a lot of xrays as well (although what you have had doesn't sound like alot to me). The risk from xray exposure is small and I wouldn't add any stress to you life. I I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Stephanie, JW is right. The human body can withstand A LOT of radiation. I use to work in surgery & we used a lot of radiation. Of course, we were monitored very closely. Nobody I worked with, ever came close to dangerous levels. CT scans don't use radiation (I don't believe anyway) they use radio waves. About the side pain you have, is it low on your side? Does it feel like a broken rib or a mass or something deep inside that hurt all the time? This is how my journey to a FMS diagnosis began. The doctor was treating me for post herpatic neuralgia because I also had a rash in that area he thought was shingles. I've read here of several people that have this same condition. Is this a symptom?

Well if you have scoliosis its possibel having a curve pushes things around! i would defintly go get it checked out. How old are you? becuase if you are not growing anymore they probably wont do anything for you unless its really bad but i think your doctor would notice if it was bad ..at least they should.

Teresa... The pain on my side started in my right rib cage.. It is pretty constant and dull.. It hurts mostly with movement, but aches most of the time.. This is on the same side as my underarm pain.. and shoulder pain.. I am ok in the area of my heart and get regular breast exams, The rib cage pain seems to radiate to the front and back.. sometimes my shoulder and chest area hurts on that side too... Im pretty sure there are no swollen glands.. Its just so bothersome.. curious.. what was the outcome for you ?

TERESA - October 1

OH MY GOD, STEPHANIE ! ! ! That's EXACTLY what I have been experencing for almost two years! It has to be a symptom of FMS. It's always there, sometimes sharp, radiating from front to back. What side is yours on? Mine is on the right & down low in the area of the last rib. I have a rash or itchy red blister like bumps in that area on & off. In Jan. of this year I also had a breast biopsy that was neg but in the rt breast . It was an enlarged lymph node. I have shoulder pain but no arm pit pain. I experenence chest pain on & off all the time, even had a heart cath, everything was fine. I 've had no outcome. They can't find anything. My rheumy said the rash was a lupus rash.

Stephanie417 - October 2

Theresa.. wow.. I feel for you, but am somewhat comforted at the same time... my pain is also on the right side.. almost right under the breast but goes down to the lower rib.. sometimes I can not tell if it is coming from the back of the ribs or the front.. its soooo nagging and no one seems to understand.. All I know is that so far no one has real answers... The only thing I do not have is the rash.. Ive tried chiropractic.. but it is still there.. Ice and heat help temporarily but not for long.. Its annoying more than anything and interferes with taking care of my little girl.. It hurts to lift her and giving her a bath is really hard because I have to lean over the tub, putting pressure on the ribs... It sometimes feels bruised, other times it feels deeper.. but its usually sensitive to touch.. like i said some movement makes it worse.. there have been a few weeks of no pain, then out of nowhere its back !!.. Ugh.. Ive been given anti inflamatories, maybe I should try them.. Either way, I will probably see my doctor because of the underarm pain.. I will let you know what he says or if I find anything that helps.. I know I did have one doc say it was costochondritis, but its not as local as it was at that time.. I hope we find some more specific answers, I am happy for you that the biopsy of the breast was ok.. This will probably one thing I need to rule out.. Let's keep in touch on this.. it seems to be pretty significant in both of our Journeys with Fibro.. Just out of curiosity, how old are you?... I am 29 now.. Thanks again !

Janie - October 2

Hi Stephanie, I have dealt with exactly what you describe (for years)... it is called myofascial pain & is extremely common & painful... although nothing to really worry about, please see the following link it should help to calm your fears ::::: http://www.triggerpointbook.com/angina.htm

TERESA - October 2

Stephanie, Iam 46. The first time I had is flare up I was 43 just before my 44th b-day. The pain was awful & I ended up in the ER. They though it was a kidney stone or gallstones. I wonder if you have been checked for these? Of course mine was not & the pain has never been that bad again but it is always there! They decided my pain was from a shingles out break I was having about the sametime. I had a CT scan & an IVP (to check my kidney) & they found nothing! They gave me an antibiotic for kidneys (but I don't remember what it was), anti-inflamatory, & pain meds. They didn't work! I know what you mean about the bruised feeling, mine gets so bad at times I can't even lie on that side. Lifting has become a problem for me too! Every month the doctor would ask me "Has the pain gone away" & when I said no, he'd look @ me like he didn't believe me! I started hurting all over about 6 months ago & thats when he refered me to a rheumatologist. Hediagnosised me with FMS & Lupus. Now my regular doctor has a better attitude toward me, he doesn't treat me like a drug seeking addict anymore!!! I think you should ttry the anti-inflamatory the doctor gave you so that even if they don't work you can say you tried them & he can go from there! As for the pain you have in your armpit, it could be like the swollen lymph node I had in my breast. Most likely nothing but maybe related to the pain in your side. Janie thanks for the link I will look in to it. So you have it to? Is it on the right side? THIS MUST BE A FMS SYMPTOM! !

Stephanie417 - October 2

Teresa.. I am seeing a chiropractor tomarrow... Im sure I i will have yet another x ray.. but honestly.. I hope they find out something about this rib thing.. Today it is so bad I feel sick to my stomach.. Plus the back ribs are sending shooting pain to my front side and it hurts like a mother.. seriously Its getting depressing.. every breath I take I get a sharp pain.. Im freaked...Talk to you soon..

Janie - October 2

Stephanie, did you go to the link I posted? It explains EXACTLY what you describe... you have already said that you have had tons of x-rays & scans...... doesn't it makes sense to have a look at the obvious reason for the pain (myofascial) instead of continuing to say how "freaked out" you are? I just don't get it.... why do people ask questions & then decide not to care who takes the time or effort to answer them? I have had CMP for over 5 years! I know what I'm talking about.... if something was terribly wrong with you they would know after all the testing you have had done! your anxiety is a choice at this point, and stress & worry will only amplify your symptoms MORE....hope this finds you well.

JJ1 - October 2

I would think you would be OK with the x-rays. You haven't mentioned what if anything you are doing for all your pain. Hope you have luck at the chiropractor if that helps you.

Stephanie417 - October 3

Janie, Yes I did go to the link, and I was very interested in the fact that my symptoms are similar.. Anxiety has always been an issue for me.. But I have had a few scares and I guess It is more comforting for me to have an exact diagnosis rather than assuming that I know what it is.. At times it feels that my rib is actually out of place, that it has moved or is a wrong position.. This is why I feel the need to persue it further...I have never had an xray concerning this matter.. I thank you for the information.. It was helpful and I'm sorry If I didnt thank you personally..I will bring this up to my doctor on my next visit..

Virg - October 3

Hi Stephanie417, I wouldn't worry about the x rays and ct scans. And its good to get them. Shucks if the doctor doesn't know what it is and how to treat. Also if it's fibro symptoms then us going to constantly get tested might open up the medical community into getting more funding for a serious study into this syndrome we all suffer from. When I had
surgery at the age of 43 I went into severe fm flare ups and it began with my
right chest rib area where I thought for sure it was heart or something. The pain was intense. I

Virg - October 3

Cont'd...but I had an EKG and all was OK BUT, itdid raise questions for my doctor at that time and she started coming up with FMS info and looking into it a lot more. So do what you feel you must, not to worry the doctors will info you if there is danger and all the best.
