RALPH - April 2

HELLO,
MY GENERAL PRACTIONER PRESCRIBED ELAVIL FOR MY FIBRO PAIN AND TO AID IN SLEEP. STARTED ME AT 10MG AND SAID TO UP IT TO 20 MG AFTER ABOUT THREE WEEKS. MY WIFE IS A PHARMACIST AND TOLD ME ABOUT THE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS WITH THIS DRUG. I DON'T TAKE VERY WELL TO MEDICINES. I CANNOT TOLERATE THE SSRI'S AT ALL. NEURONTIN MADE ME HAVE WEIRD REACTIONS IN THE HEAD. SO I AM VERY NERVOUS TO BEGIN THIS ONE. I HAVE HAD IT ON MY SHELF FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS NOW AND HAVEN'T TAKEN ONE PILL.
CAN SOMEONE WHO MAY BE ON IT OR KNOWS OTHERS ON IT OFFER ME SO ADVICE. I REALLY FEAR HAVE SEIZURES, FAINTING, OR OTHER WEIRD REACTIONS THAT I HEARD THIS DRUG COULD DO??
AND DOES IT REALLY WORK FOR OUR PROBLEM??
IF IT REALLY DOESN'T THEN I DON'T SEE THE POINT OF EVEN BEGINNING IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

i am a 5'3" female, i started elavil a few months ago at 25 mg at bedtime to help me sleep. i have a really really bad sleep disorder and cannot sleep without meds. after a few weeks my doc increased my dosage to 50 mg at bedtime. i am sleeping better and having less pain. i have had no ill effects from this drug except dry mouth in am, which is no big deal to me. sure beats staying awake all night. of course, different people have different reactions to various meds. i think it's definitely worth a try. all drugs have very serious potential side effects. depends on if the benefit outweighs the risk.

I too have had severe side effects from SSRI's
enough to be rushed to the ER from side effects. I too was started at 10mg and was very very hesitant. I have had no ill side effects except for increased appitite. I was told by my doctors that Elavil at thiese doses are more for sleep and antiexy only.
I must admit I have started to sleep better without waking up 5-7 times a night screaming ouch from my trigger points.
I also have the dry mouth.

I took Elavil for years starting with 10mg and got up to 75mg. It helped a lot with sleeping but eventually it stopped working. I did gain weight while taking it but that is the only side affect I had. I have not found anything else that will help me sleep like it did.

My doctor in the beginning put me on elavil 10mg. He said this medication was not used anymore for depression but could help with sleep but it never did anything for me however Ralph this medication could do the trick for you since you can not take the other ones. It is the lesser of all the antidepressants out there and one of the oldest. Take care. Stay positive :)

Ralph, Hi I am a guy and over 6 ft tall and weigh 225lbs and I take 50mg at night. It is the only drug out of several that helps me stay asleep and does help with back pain somewhat. It I take too much such as 100mg which I did take for awhile, I used to kick the covers to the floor of the bed. I think it gave me restless legs. Try out low dose and work up to 50mg or even 75mg, but see how you feel. I gained 20lbs from this drug and I excercise 3-4 days a week. I also get dry mouth from it pretty bad, but it is better than having nothing. Nortrypteline is another tricyclic that I might end up trying. Ambien and Lunesta do not work and not worth the money, even the CR , just costs more. I sleep but dream stressfull dreams most of the night and wake up really tired. I still work a full time job and fish as much as I can to help take my mind off of things. Try to stay postive and not worry about the med, give it a good chance, it might take 2 months to work for you and try to eat healthy.

I am a 5'9", 160 lb. female taking 50 mg of Elavil each night for the past 4 years or so. It has helped me tremendously, to the point that I have very little pain (only under the most severe stress) and I sleep soundly and deeply each night. I still have trouble with concentration and memory -- I don't think the Elavil has helped much with these FMS symptoms. I have had no side effects that I am aware of. My weight gain happened before the Elavil, so I can't even blame that on the drug.

Yes I also took Elavil (actually the generic Amitriptyline because it was cheaper) I took 25mg for about a year. It was the only thing that ever helped my pain and let me sleep without waking up every hour. After taking it for about 3 weeks my pains started disappearing from one area to the next. I then went off of it for a while to see how I would feel and all the same pains starting appearing again. So I know that it helped me. I would have pain mostly only when I was under a lot of stress. I just went off of it recently because I plan to start trying to get pregnant. Some of my pains are now back however. I have had no side effects except weight gain and increased appetite.

I only take 10mg of Elavil - I don't want to go higher as I also have a liver problem - but that amount had no side effects at all - a low dosage it should be fine for you - as for the side effects I think they are with a more powerful dose - give it a go, it helps with your sleep! good luck
