I have the leg pain too. The side of my knee hurts so bad I can't bend it and shoots down into the bottom of my foot through my calf. One leg is much worse than the other. I had chest and back pain so bad that before I was diagnosed with fibro, they put me in ICU and told me I was having a heart attack. You are not alone with chronic leg pain so please don't be scared. It is also getting me down and I am afraid I am going to have to quit working because of my immobility. I took Celebrex and it helped for a while, but now I take both Celebrex and Tylenol and it doesn't relieve the pain. I am hoping it is just an episode and will go away. The doctor tried me on Neurontin, but it made me even more tired than what I already am and I couldn't stand that. I'm 51 and have had fibro for four years. I am hoping for a cure in my lifetime. I have lost two jobs so far because of the illness. All we can do is just keep pluggin on day to day till they find an answer. I will remember you in my prayers!

I liked what you said intheknow, I believe the same way and if people like us would just challenge their doctors we may get our questions finally answered.

Dear Liquid_Niki: When I was diagnosed with FMS 9 years ago, it started in my legs and feet with swelling. I could hardly walk. I do not mean this in an ugly way, but, I have lost right much weight which helped me tremendously. If you are overweight, try and get the weight off of your legs and feet. Keep moving as much as you can to keep from getting stiff (I know this is easier said than done on the hard days). Also, stay away from caffeine and sugar as much as possible - it does make FMS worse. Soak in Epsom salt and rub your legs down with Aspercreme. Folks with FMS are magnesium deficient. I soak almost every night in Epsom salt and it really helps. Also, take a magnesium supplement daily. I am praying for you and empathetic towards your pain.

I have incredible pain my legs, chest and arms. It feels like someone is hitting me with a baseball bat. So far, this is what I've found that helps:

I had a blood (PCR) test that showed I had active Epstein-Barr virus. I took Famvir, 500mg 3/day for a week, and afterwards the virus became inactive. The pain has mostly gone away! Every few months it comes back, the pain comes back, I take the Famvir, and the pain mostly goes away. I find that when I'm not on the medication, the pain is still there, but it's manageable. I find working out with weights a few times a week really helps. I hope everyone here figures out a way to manage the pain and get better.

I am 36. For years I was convinced I had MS. All MRIs are neg. My pain started with headaches, neck pain, upper arm pain (to where my arms trembled if I were to lean on them). Now it is my hips, thighs, shins, and bottom of feet. It is constant, worse when sitting. Legs feel heavy and like they are bruised. No swelling, no redness. Lateral side of knees hurt. I have a lot of leg muscle weakness. OTC meds help minimally, phobic of anything stronger. I have also been having blurred vision in my right eye. Opthalmologist says eyes 20/20. All labs ok (ANA, WBC, Hgb). I still wonder if it is MS. Any answers, any similarities?

Check your saliva pH. Test kits are cheap at health food stores. Should be 7.0. Any lower number means you have problems.

Anyone can use the treatment method I am on. All info and details on FibroFix. It's not a product, just free website with info.

I have fibro and a horrible six week flare up on going. My entire left leg aches so bad i'm nauseous. It feels like adult growing pains but hundreds of times worse. It goes into the foot and cramps. It chills and tingles. I am in physical therapy and we are doing pilates because she says my hamstrings are the tightest she has ever worked. I am so scared something else is going on....................................I have no idea where to turn.I do ice it constantly

Beverly - Aug 4th, 2006 2:59 AM

I've read all the comments here this morning and can only agree about leg pain. The worry that there is something not right causes more problems. My main problem over the past weeks, or maybe months is shoulder and arm pain. Somedays there others not.Sorry everyone is having to put up with these things but it's good to know you're not alone.
Take care everyone Beverly

I also have the leg pain, MyRhematologist said I had restless legs, but later told me I had Fibro, He has a Fibro clinic and really tries to help me. But everytime I go he gives me new meds..I am now after 4 years finding out I have Arthritis in my knee and my left shoulder. My PC does not even touch me anymore when I go in to see him. I have always thought they lable it Fibromyala because they dont really know what is going on. I do know that we all have a lot of the same things going on.

Jenny - Aug 4th, 2006 5:27 PM

You should ask your doc about Chronic Myofascial Pain Disease. I also have the severe pain in my legs, and I have been diagnosed w/ CMPD. I take painkillers and go to physical theapy. My doc has also prescribed lidocaine patches, which numb the area. They work really good.

Jenny - Aug 5th, 2006 10:31 AM

Randamer, It sure sounds like FM. I was diagnosed just after my 30th birthday. I went through alot of tests. Ihink you need to see a different Dr., One who is willing to have an openmind and listen to you. I see a pain management dr. And also go to physical therapy. You might try to get your doc to prescribe physical therapy (deep tissue massage) It really hurts in the beginning but pays off in the long wrong. Also, Has anyone ever heard of Biofreeze? It's awesome, a pain reliving gwel that you can apply as many times a day as you need to. You can get it from a physical therapist, choropractor, or maybe even your doc. I hope this helps. Just keep pushing and be very persistant.DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!

I also have pain in my right leg occasionally .. It comes and goes..but when it is there it hurts very bad.. It usually seems to come from my hip joints.. One thing that seems to help me is to use a hand held massager and place it on my hip.. the pain is gone while the massager is on the hip and hurts much less after about 10 minutes.. I dont take any pain medication.. I hope this helps.. I know sometimes you are willing to try anything to help ease the pain.. this works for me, but may not for all.. Its just a suggestion.. Good luck !!

CroShayLady - Aug 24th, 2006 10:09 PM

(to Dawn) Restless Leg Syndrome feels like ants crawling around inside your calves. You can't keep your legs still. Other people interpret this a little diff. I walk it off. There are meds available. My hubby takes amitryptaline (sp). I also have sciatica from where the sciatic nerve comes out of the pelvic structure and goes down to the ankle. (Both legs). I take oxy-contin. Only 10mg 2x day. Have near-severe pain the rest of the day. Have fibro and depression. Hope you don't have sciatica.

Ria - Aug 28th, 2006 11:02 PM

Hi, I am new here...I have been reading for awhile but decided to post since I also have been experiencing leg pain..it seems it starts in the hips and goes down...knees and ankles hurt too....I have had fibro since I was 38 and I am now 69...so I have had it for a real long time...restless sleep etc...many parts of my body I cannot even touch they are so sore...I was at the kitchen sink and my hubby put his hand on my back and I jumped and screamed from pain...he was shocked that the soreness was so bad....went to a rheumatologist and the meds he gave me messed up my stomach so bad..I am sensitive to meds...I take amitryptiline and for pain ibuprofin seems to be the only thing that helps...needless to say I detest this illness....God bless you all....Ria

If thyroid tests are ok, check your saliva pH. When my clear fluids were overly acid, the pain was unbearable.

R.S.Hagen - Sep 5th, 2006 3:36 AM

Wow I thought I was nuts, I started having pain in the back of my seat and thighs a few years back, I have to sit on a foam cushion for comfort, this year the pain started in the back of my hips and down my legs to my heels and out to my toes. every where I looked on line gave me no indication this was fibro, I have had it for about 14 yrs or more, It does feel like there is bleeding inside that wont dispell, and it does hurt all the way to the bone. I massage menthol creams and elevate my legs in bed so that my heels are of the bed. Also I bought a heated back massager, It does help some, I am glad to know that it does seem to be related. I am now taking Neurontin, but only at night so far, it helps some with sleep and the burning nerve pain in my legs and arms. I am sorry there are so many of us out there, God Bless

Denise - Sep 18th, 2006 9:30 AM

I found that my legs worsen the more I walk. I'm trying to lose weight, and anytime I do any kind of aerobic activity I am in pain for days. I can't walk distance, and if I walk to fast, my legs start burning and the pain is unbearable. I'm on other medications so I have to be careful of medications I take. I've been talking advil and that seems to help, but I dont' want to take it too much. I also get the chest aches which can be pretty painful at times. Does anybody have that problem too?

Brandy - Sep 18th, 2006 10:36 AM

To Randamer,

I've had fibro since I was a teen. I am now 52. My pains started in my legs but have been body wide since my 20's. My 16 year old daughter has been having calf pains since she was 12 and now the pain has started in her hips. She has been under the care of a neuromuscular doctor and has undergone many test including a muscle biopsy of her leg muscles to look for a metabolic disease which also turned out negative. Our primary care doctor thinks she may have the start of fibro since I started when I was a teen. So if your doctor says you are to young for Fibromyalgia it is time to see one that does believe in it!. Good luck.

Hi, I have major leg pain too, plus restless leg syndrome. The only thing that helps the RLS is the drug Requip. I just have to deal with the leg pain because no one seems to be able to do anything about it. I'm also 32 and have had Fibro for about 13 years. A question I have, anyone out there have insomnia? I take so many pills and still can't sleep. It makes working sooo difficult and the fibro pain worse. I would appreciate any help with this situation. It is wearing me down body and soul!
Thank you and I hope you all have a healthy pain-free day.
Jen Wilcox

InHisSteps - Dec 14th, 2007 12:07 AM

Add me to the leg pain list. It migrates from spot to spot so quick sometimes it would be almost funny if it didn't hurt. I usually describe it as a deep, down to the bone, crampy feeling. Not just my legs though, every tender spot on the chart plus more that pop up randomly.

InHisSteps - Dec 14th, 2007 12:09 AM

oh, and yes, I have RLS also. I take clonazepam on an as needed basis. Works great for me. I'm on Tramadol for the pain.

ClaireD - Jan 8th, 2008 12:45 AM

ago. My pain is all over, legs, hips, hands, arms, neck, shoulders, sacrum, you name it. I find the spa does help some although the effects are short lived. My leg pain is worse at night and prevents me from falling into a good sleep. I am on narcotic pain meds which I get from the Pain Management Center. Has anyone here tried Lyrica? I have a friend who has it and she had severe side effects and cannot take it.

pmartin - Jan 8th, 2008 1:03 PM

I have had leg pain for at least 2 years from the hips down which runs right along with my hip pain due to the Fibro so I'm not sure which is which

msrsk624 - Jan 18th, 2008 11:05 PM

Yes. My leg pain is awful - probably the worst of all my symptoms, which are many. The combination of Effexor and Neurontin has helped to keep the pain from becoming completely intolerable, but it can still get quite bad at times. I soak in a hot bath frequently - sometimes several times a day. I also find that sitting with my warm laptop on my thighs tends to work as a heating pad and helps some, as my pain tend to be worst on the front of my thighs.

Gabbie - Jan 19th, 2008 5:41 PM

Niki, I've had most of fibro symptoms for years before being diagnosed. It was the sometimes excruciating knee pain down into my calves that made me pursue a diagnosis rather than continue to blame all my pains on other things. My rheumatologist prescribed lidocaine cream to rub into the pressure points located on the inside of each knee. If you push in that area, believe me, you will find them. I cover the area with a large bandaid to keep the cream in place. I am amazed how much it helps to alleviate the pain. It doesn't go away completely, but it has been a great help to me. Ask you rheum about it.

smavascular - Mar 1st, 2008 5:22 PM

My thighs ache so bad I can barely stand it. Yet i can hit my legs and poke them etc and it wont hurt. Its like the pain is deep inside untouchable. Sometimes burning and numbness but mainly a dull achey cramping type pain. I describe it as menstrual cramps in my thighs. I have also been having really bad pelvic pain. Im wondering if they are related. My GYN said that pelvic/abdominal adhesions can cause leg pain. I have had several abdominal/pelvic surgerys so Im hoping thats what it is and that it will be a simple fix. I hope to have a laperoscopy soon to find out. The pain is also in my low back and hips. Im off work cause its so bad right now. Its funny how it can just go away one day and be gone for months and then one day just come back for no reason. Walking or any type of physical activity worsens it. Yet never any calf pain only the thight mainly the front and middle.

smavascular - Mar 1st, 2008 5:28 PM

I have very bad thigh pain equal in both. This has been going on for years. It comes and goes for no reason. One time it went away for months and I thought it was gone for good but it came back. I have had it now for months and its getting worse. I was diagnosed with FMS. But I wonder if something else is causeing it. I have also been having a lot of low back and pelvic pain that also goes into my hips. I saw my gyn and she said I could have adhesions or endometriosis and those sometimes can cause leg pain if the pelvic nerves are involved. I hope thats what it is cause that would be an easy fix. They can have my uteres. I have no need for it anymore. Im 37 and have 3 kids no desire for more. Hopefully I can have a laperososcopy soon. Mean while I see the rheumo on mon. I really need help cause I cant take this much longer. I havent worked in 3 weeks cause its so bad. I have had a lot of test etc nothing ever comes up. Anyone ever have a laperoscopy to look for femal problems as a possible source for leg pain?

amandaknits - Mar 2nd, 2008 9:07 PM

I'm new to this.. I was just diagnosed with FMS and one of my main complaints is lower body pain. This is actually one of the criteria to be met on this site: http://www.nfra.net/default.htm . Maybe that would help...

halligoo - Mar 22nd, 2008 10:28 PM

After over 7 years of tests, I finally found somebody that correctly diagnosed my problem. A MRI and a few other tests found degenerative spine disorder was causing nerves in my back to send messages to my brain that my legs and feet were hurting. Sounds crazy, but with the proper nerve medication, I have been virtually pain free for nearly a year. My savior was a Nurse practitioner that I met by accident one day. None of the doctors or specialists were worth 10 cents. I actually had 1 doctor tell me 'Welcome to middle age!!' Moron.
