traclynn - I take 25 mg of Amitriptyline every night. I'm real intolerant of medication so that is the max otherwise I would just sleep like Snow White - forever.
Restorative sleep is very important for anyone with Fibromyalgia (FMS). Your muscles need restorative sleep in order to repair themselves from the days activities. FMS interrupts the REM cycle making restorative sleep impossible. And that results in higher pain levels. Your doctor is trying to find a balance between the Amitriptyline and your metabolism. Give it some time - like a month. Make sure you are well hydrated with water (not coffee or soda) to move the medication throughout your body. After a month, if you still have problems, go and ask for something else. Some people have luck with Ambien but Amitriptyline is the standard medication used for FMS.
Frankly, with FMS you are going to be tired to some degree or another all of the time. All of us would like some semblance of our former lives back. You are certainly not alone in that desire. There are stages of grief that accompany a diagnosis of FMS. You will work your way through them over time. Listening to what your body is telling you and respecting those limits are the keys to living with FMS. If you continue to push the paybacks will only increase in intensity. Now that I get it, I feel rather liberated.
I hope that my comments are helpful to you in some way. Take care.
