I've tried Advil for years for my fybromyalgia symptoms. I have found that hydrocodone works the best and eliminates all of my symptoms, but my doc hesitates to prescribe it due to it addictive qualities. Any other suggestions on what might be helpful?

I have read on this site about 2 different medications. Lyrica and also 024 fibromyalgia that can be purchased on the internet. I do not know if that is of any help to you.

Diane - Feb 17th, 2006 12:45 AM

I've been on every NSAID available & they do not work. Only hydrocodone works for me. You are very lucky to ger a Dr.that understands this. I ruined my stomach with Nsaids over 15 years.

again...as Tracy said. Lyrica has been a life safer for me. If you can take hydrocodone...you can work through the loopiness that eventually fades with Lyrica

Tracy, O24 Fibromyalgia can be purchased at Rite Aid, Walgreens & CVS. If you can't find O24 Fibromyalgia, the O24 Pain Neutralizer will give you the same results

try pregabalin or amytriptilined

I too have found the hydrocodone to be the only Rx that has worked on my pain. It took years to get on a plan with a doctor that knows me and is willing to find what works for me. In my case been there done that on every option out there and still end up falling back to Hydrocodone. I'm very excited to try the pregablin!! I also found a 8-day cleanse and the site offers Collastin, Riso Triene, Deep sea minerals, and the seven essentials has both in it. It looks like a promising option. I've been wanting to try a full body detox to see what the results are. I found that at healthy-living.org if you're into checking it out.

one that has saved me time and time again is Zanor, i think in the US its called Zanax. I rarely need to take a pill or 2 but that has always saved me from a bad flare..downside the next has been severe tiredness..

Find a new doctor and make sure you write a bad review on your doctor at rate a doc dot com. then contact your state board and tell them your doc is being a pain in the butt about that. you deserve to be pain free! Hydrocodone 10/500 with soma works with me.

also stay away from Lyrica! its bad news

bugilu - Jul 29th, 2009 4:51 PM

If you are interested in a detox program, you may want to try Arbonne. They detox over a 7 day period and I have heard LOTS of great things about it. My husband has done it too!

bugilu - Jul 29th, 2009 4:57 PM

I know Hydrocodone and Soma are great for you, I also take them along with Lyrica and Celexa, but Hydrocodone is so habit forming that I want to stop. Does anyone else have this same problem? Soma is very habit forming as well, but only takes me 2 days to recover, Hydrocodone (Vicodin) is much different. I don't sleep well at night and the Celexa (anti-depressant) doesn't help. What is the best thing for sleeping?

cooped - Jul 30th, 2009 7:58 AM

Hydrocodone effects my sleep after about the third day. Not a problem with Percocet or Deladin. Have been using Lunesta for sleep, which is working well.

I'm going to a Pain Management Doc that said he didnt want to prescribe any "long acting" pain killer early on. I get 30 7.5/325 a month and getting cortisone shots for a bulgin disc in the my neck. I wants to give the Savella I'm on for FM a few more months! He tells me to be patient! I ahev been going through this for years!

wwhitfor - Aug 1st, 2009 10:47 PM

I am on a fentanyl patch, which is a patch you would wear for 3 days, and then you disgard it. You then put on a new one. This patch gives you doses of morphine into your body, and believe me it has changed my life. Dont take pills, just put the patch on, and i dont feel as much pain in my lower back, ribs etc.

Lyrica, Cymbalata and Savella are all good choices for Fibromyalgia (FMS). You are really wasting money on Advil as only certain classes of prescribed medication work for the chronic pain associated with FMS.

Additionally, you are subjecting your body to a high ongoing level of stress by not treating this syndrome properly. Your doctor is smart not to jump on the hydrocodone wagon if you have not exhausted every other option.

Also, by not treating a chronic pain cycle properly, it will be much harder to bring it back under control. Any decent pain specialist will tell you that.

Find another doctor and explore all of the options. If everything else fails, than Hydrocodone may be your answer. Good luck and take care.

Hydrocodone 10/500 is the only thing that really
works for my pain. I have tried many different
meds and end up in the same place.

Draco - Aug 17th, 2009 10:56 AM

I take Neurontin, Amitriptyline and my GP also has me currently on Haloperidol for anxiety, I find the mix a little heavy and they can make me foggy, but they do help the pain, on a good day the neurontin almost numbs it completely, on a bad day it takes the edge right off it. I self medicate, don't know if anyone else does, my GP is happy for me to up or down the amount of tablets I take a day. I did find that if I cut all the dairy and bread out of my diet this also helps loads.

I am 34 years old and just today (finally) was diagnosed with fybromyalgia. I have been researching the illness for about a year now and always thought that this has to be what I have...and I was right!!! Well, the rheumatologist prescribed Lyrica for me to start on until I see the fibro specialist (in November). Does anyone have any info on how it worked for them and any side effects to watch out for? I currently take a whole list of meds which include Cymbalta, Darvocet (prescribed for a torn tendon in my rotator cuff that I had surgery on two months ago), and many other things for a whole list of ailments due to this disease. The rheumatologist I saw said she only diagnoses and does not treat the illness and she referred me to the courage center, a fibro specialist, and a pain clinic and see my regular Dr also to be treated. But my regular Dr said she would not prescribe narcotic pain killers because I would not be level headed enough to take care of my kids (which are ages 9, 6, and 2). Well, now that I am officially diagnosed maybe she will reconsider but I have told her...if I feel pain, I can't take care of my kids either! Sometime it hurts to just have them sitting next to me constantly moving as ADHD as they are and can't sit still. When they bump me too much it hurts me let alone when my 2 year old stands at my feet for me to pick him up! It breaks my heart! Anyone have any kind of info to help me deal with this, I would greatly appriciate it! Thanks!

Dear sarasmile477,

I've tried a few different medications for my FMS, Lyrica being the most recent. One of my FMS symptoms is an intolerance/sensitivity to pharmaceauticals.

My doctor suggested that we try Lyrica as it is the first medication designed specifically for fibromyalgia. Because of the way my body interacts with medications, we started off at a VERY low dose. (The usual minium daily dose is 75mg) We started off at 25mg per day. After a week the only side effect I had was feeling groggy/sluggish. We upped the dose to 50mg per day. After two days I started having bad headaches. Kind of like a migraine headache but kind of like a sinus headache...very strange.

I was determined to "grin and bear" it as my doctor said my body needed to get used to the drug and the bad side effects would diminish. They didn't, in fact the headaches got worse and so did the groggyness. I also noticed that my hair was falling out more quickly (we all know that we lose hair on a daily basis, but it increased when I started taking this medication)

I stopped after a week (two weeks total taking Lyrica). With no intended side effects and bothersome adverse reactions to the medication, it just wasn't worth it.

The best medication I've used for pain management is Naproxyn. The problem with Naproxyn, aside from it being addictive, is the fact that it is very hard on your stomach and liver after prolonged usage. It's also a 12 hour pill and the benefit only lasts about 6 to 8 hours for me. It's good when I'm really in a lot of pain but for everyday management it's not suitable.

I wish you luck in figuring out what works best for you. Perhaps you'll be one of the lucky ones with Lyrica, I hope you are. I have a two year old daughter and I know what it's like to not be able to run and play with her. I wouldn't wish that on any mother.

fibrosurvivor - Aug 22nd, 2009 4:45 PM

Hey there, I have had fibro for 11 years and have been on several different medications. The ones that seem to work the best for me are hydrocodone for the pain which is a relief some days more than others. Also, Soma if I really need it, but this makes me very tired. I only take that if somebody is around because I have two kids. Also, for nighttime I take 60mg of cymbalta since it makes me tired I take it at bedtime instead of in the morning along with that I take zanaflex and trazadone. Using these 3 together has really helped with my sleep. I usually just do the hydrocodone during the day and then these other three to sleep. Sometimes when I feel like me sleep isn't going great I switch to the soma and take out the xanaflex. I hope you can find what works for you. It took me along time to find the right way for me, but it can happen it just can be along road sometimes. Hang in there.

sassybrat48911 - Aug 23rd, 2009 1:18 AM

xanax 2 mg p.m. to
works perfect for but took a year ans 30lbs later just as long as no weight gain I have been lucky but though HELL ans wanted to just die,but God brought through.Just work with your meds but don't be stupid and over do it.No cold Turkey on OC or xanax and cymbalta Pure Hell if you do and could put you in a seisure of hospital.BE CAREFUL!!!!

Canada17 - Sep 2nd, 2009 7:15 PM

I've been taken off of Lyrica and my DR has now prescribed me Cymbalta. I've read about the benefits and the side effects. The Apo-Amytriptiline made me feel good but the side-effects were too much, especially when I started getting blister-like pimples on my hands - very strange.

Cymbalta only comes in one dose and there is no way to cut it in half. I have a history of adverse reactions to strong pharmaceuticals so I am hoping I will be ok with this one. I may have to walk around in a daze for a month while my body gets used to it.

I got my Naproxyn refilled, I take it for flare-ups but as an everyday pain reliever, it isn't all that effective.

I'm going to see a Naturopath next week, I am hoping there are dietary changes I can make that will help allieviate some of my symptoms. My body will be better for it regardless.

I think the strangest part of this disease is the fact that I have days that I actually feel great and have lots of energy. But then there are days, for no reason at all, that I feel TERRIBLE! Some days I feel fine when I wake up and then by lunch time I'm worn out. Bizarre.

Tracieg - Sep 6th, 2009 6:44 PM

I take Lyrica 100 mg sometimes twice a day. hydrocodone works best for me when the pain is at its worst. I was so anxious to try Savella, within 4 days of taking it I was uptight and felt like I was going to explode. I was so edgy and moody that I stopped taking it. I probably should have waited to see if the side effects would ease but I just quit. What is this 024 fibromyalgia that people are talking about?

axxie - Sep 15th, 2009 5:06 AM

Canada17, Cymbalta comes in two strenghts 60 or 30, I work with both, I'm trying to ween myself off cymbalta 60 and now taking 30, when it gets really bad then I take two 30mg a different times during the day. As for pain, I also take lyrica to help me with the pain when it gets really bad and believe it or not, tylenol time release helps me when my legs are stiff and painful from walking to much. It's not the best, but it helps.

Noca - Oct 29th, 2009 8:30 PM

What is Deladin?

Noca - Oct 29th, 2009 8:31 PM

My body best tolerates Dilaudid over most other opioids. I like Oxycontin better but my pain doctor wont prescribe it, so Dilaudid it is.

Canada17 - Nov 3rd, 2009 4:18 PM

Cymbalta was a nightmare! I took one 60mg pill before bed. I woke up in the middle of the night with a terribly upset stomach. I was vomitting and had bad diarhea all night! The next day I was way beyond stomach issues. I was anxious, cold sweats, pupil dialation...I was basically VERY high. Needless to say, I couldn't work that day. I didn't even bother the 30mg dose, I'm too worried about it!

I've just seen a physiatrist, she prescribed me Cesamet 0.5mg, one at night and one in the morning. I hope it works!

I had never heard about 024 Fibromyalgia, I am skeptical about topical pain relievers for my pain...it isn't always localized and it comes and goes...does that mean I just have to spray it all over my body every day? Seems a little outlandish to me.

I'll let you know how the Cesamet works, I have high hopes! The side effects can't be any worse than any other drugs I've taken!

Noca - Nov 4th, 2009 6:08 PM

Cesamet at 0.5mgs made me dizzy, gave me headaches, and made me miserable 24/7, but it did treat my nausea well. I had to go off it cause I couldn't tolerate the side effects.

lucky13 - Nov 13th, 2009 10:47 AM

As far as over the counter pain meds, tylenol arthritis works well. My rheumatologist perfers Tylenol over advil and tylenol arthritis is 650mg instead of Tylenol extra strength that is 500mg. so it is a little stronger.

Canada17 - Nov 13th, 2009 10:49 AM

It makes sense that your doctor would prefer tylenol over advil. Tylenol is a pain reliever whereas advil is more for inflammation.

KateT1969 - Nov 15th, 2009 11:48 PM

this is so common with FMS 1 drug works wonders for 1 persn and wont for another person . some of the drugs here in Australia are not available hee that is mentioned here POOH
