I don't know the answer to your question, but a simple Web search will lead you to numerous articles that link fibromyalgia symptoms and vitamin D deficiency. I recently found out that I am Vitamin D deficient and I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia for 7 years. I just began a regimin of 20 minutes per day of sun time with no sun screen during off peak hours. It hardly seems possible that something so simple could account for the wide array of symptoms, but at this point I am willing to give it a try.

A web search does turn up a lot of articles relating Vitamin D deficiencies to Fibromyalgia. I became curious about a possible link after being diagnosed with FM and a serious Vitamin D deficiency at the same time.

How exactly do they tell if you are lacking in a certain vitamin? I've had lots of blood test & they have all come back normal.

I was diagnosed with Vit D deficiency 11 years ago, two years after my symptoms started, it took that long to convince my GP that there was something wrong with me.

Michele, Do you have any idea what caused your vitamin D deficiency? My rheumatologist blamed it on my gastric bypass. I was diagnosed with FM 4 years before my surgery and suffered with it long before that. I recently was diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency which improved slightly with the treatment.

If you live in areas of high rainfall like I do (Vancouver, BC) then assume you will be Vit D deficient. I always take Vit D suppliments because we just don't get enough sun here especially in the winter.

I have Vit D Deficiency. I am taking 50,000 units of D by prescription once a week. It hasn't made a dent in my fibro symptoms. I have read many articles on MS having a root cause in D deficiency though.

i'm in the uk, my rheumatologist tested for vit D and i have no deficiency, i also have no deficiency of calcium or magnesium, deficiencies of these are often blamed, so still have no idea why.

That is a great question. I actually just recently posted a video about that on my site. You can view it here. It is by Brian Rosner talking about Vitamin D deficiency.

I recently visited my Rheumatologist with possible fibro symptoms. Naturally he wanted to rule out everything else, but mentioned that I should be taking Vitamin D 800 IU a day. I started taking 1400 IU (400 with my multiple vitamin and 1000 supplement) and my symptoms are reduced. However my Primary tells me my Vit D levels are normal. Haven't seen the lab report yet. I'm interested to find out what the numbers are.

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in March 2003 after suffering eight years (onset caused by severe bout of food poisoning early 1995). In September 2008, diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency. Almost did not fill scrip for ergocalciferol. Took two capsules one day a week for three months. Felt like a new person! After years of debilitating pain, stiffness, muscle spasms, weakness, fatigue, etc., I was up cleaning house, painting, doing crafts (even sold some of them) and things I'd been unable to do for years.

Hey PD, your blood work may come in normal for the range but not for you. Try a multi vit twice a week, and see how you do on that. I was first diagnosed as having MS, but 2 years later and negative test, they pronounce me with fibro and vit b12 and d and calcium deficiencies. My gp swears that the deficiencies has a direct link to MS and Fibro. So ask the good doctor to repeat your test every 3 months. I know my doctor does, and she test also my thyroid, also deficient.

I've had muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, back (and hamstrings more recently) for at least three years, which had been getting progresively worse. Recent blood test indicated I was low on vitamin D (21 ng/mL). Six weeks ago I started taking a single weekly dose (50,000 IU) of vitamin D and since then I have noticed a remarkable improvement! The tension, stiffness and pain are pretty much gone now. I attribute the improvement to the vitamin D but will need to wait a bit longer before I can be completely certain.
