Shaking Hands

How did get out of shaking someone's hand? I cringe everytime I have to b/c people have always been taught to give a firm handshake. Ouch! But it hurts. I don't want to appear rude but I don't want to go into an explanation as to why I won't shake their hand. Any tips for dealing with this?

I simpy say "it is my pleasure to meet you, I'm unable to shake hands due to an arthitic condition" and leave it at that. Maybe a bit of a white lie but everyone is familiar with arthitis and it requires no further explanation. I hope this answer is of some help to you. Take care.
